Hi Jenny :) I'm surprised you're okay with the cocker spaniel! Dog and cat allergies arise from the dander (the oil produced in the hair follicle). It's not quite the length of the hair itself that causes the problems (although in cats..the longer the hair, themore dander), than it is the layer in the coat. If you're looking for a little dog who has grit and spunk and only 1 coat layer (making it the more hypoallergenic), I'd suggest the Jack Russell terrier. It's very active it's whole life and very friendly. It will definitely suck up all the attention you want to give him and give it back in spades. They're also REALLY smart and easily trainable to do tricks, etc.
Other dogs in the category of hypoallergenic that run small are: poodles and their mixes, bichons, silky terriers, yorkies (though I know you don't want one of those), mini schnauzers, cairn terriers, Australian terriers, Havanese, Coton de Tulear, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Schipperke and of course, the hairless Mexican and Chinese and American breeds.
But if you're looking for true spunk and grit...go with the Jack Russell :)
And remember, the amount of dander a dog creates increases as it gets older. So even if you go outside these breeds because it seems like you did okay with them as pups, the allergies will get worse as the dog gets older. Good luck :)

This is very confusing and not a question!
