What is the best dog food for a Lab/bulldog with a sensative stomach?

We have been feeding her rice, chicken liver and carrots for the last few months, but it has become quite difficult to keep up. She is about 10 months and off and on she get diarreha like she did when she was on dog food that upset her tummie and I'm not sure why she's having these random episodes of diarreha. She is the runt of the litter. She has been scratching all her hair off lately and biting her skin. She has become quite a hassle and I don;t think I can take it anymore. I want to start feeding her regular dog food to aleviate a little of the stress and hopefully make her happy and healthy. please suggest something that is not super expensive...that is the reason I was home cooking for her initially. serios answers please

Has your veterinarian diagnosed her with Colitis? I would get a proper diagnosis from your vet first and then start working on her diet. In the meantime, try boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburg and rice. Good luck!

ADD: Ok.. if you don't want to cook... you can purchase Hill's Prescription i/d from your vet (it is a bland diet). Normally, I do not like to promote Hill's... but in your case it sounds like you will have good luck with it. i/d is the equivalent to boiled chicken and rice/hamburg and rice.

CHOP MEAT WITH RICE MY DOG HAS THE SAME PROBLEM

Feed your dog a good quality dry dog food. I couldn't believe it myself, but my vet claims that Iams is the best quality dog food on the market - better than the Science Diet their office sells.

Do not change his food - ever. Many dogs digestive systems can't handle a changing diet. I have a Golden Retriever with a sensitive stomach. Been feeding her Nutro (lamb and rice) since she was a puppy. We still have occassional tossing of the chunks - she's 5 years old.

its impossible to recomend a food without knowing what country you are in...

most often LAMB and RICE is considered the gentlest.. however not all lamb and rice foods are good..

avoid ALL from grocery or Wal Mart.. be comfortable reading lables so you know what ingredients are good and what are bad

BAD - corn, wheat, beef, pork, soy, by-products, meat meal (mystery meat), animal fat ( again mystery animal)

GOOD - lamb meal, brown rice...

if chicken isnt a problem you might find a good food with chicken rather than lamb...

in Canada I like NUTRAM

the itchiness is very likely food allergys as opposed to bad tummy.. but the same ingredients I listed above are also problems for dogs with allergies...

never get a runt of the litter.. they generally have problems...

Boiled chicken and brown rice is very easy on a sensitive tummy but as for regular dog food, I feed my dog Hypo-Allergenic kibble with only one protein source. My dog has always had a sensitive stomach and many dry kibbles gave him diarrhea. Sometimes dogs with sensitive digestive systems can not handle more than one meat/protein source. The kibble my dogs eat is Natural Balance duck and potato and it costs around $11-12 for a 5 lb. bag. This food is also good for skin conditions or sensitivity as both my dogs have this problem. I have one dog with a sensitive tummy and skin and another with sensitive skin so I know where you are coming from.

added note: some of us have recommended store bought food....

Go to PetsMart and purchase Blue Buffalo Dog Food. they have a formula for sensitive tummies.

You will have to pay more to get a food for your dogs sensitive tummy, but in the long run it will cost less, you won't have to feed her as much and you will have less vet bills!

Blue Buffalo has taken the vitamins and supplements and cold formed them into pellets called "LifeSource Bits" and add them to the kibble after the kibble is baked to preserve the potency of the nutrients! You should see a difference in two weeks!

Just liver? That's all you've been giving her as a meat source? No wonder she's ill!

What do livers do in the body? They filter out the bad stuff.. A raw diet should only include about 10% organ and not just liver!

That being said, California Natural is a limited ingredient food that may do well for her. I only pay about $17 for a 20 lb bag around here and it has great ingredients..

You can try their store locater here.

Here are the ingredients..

Ingredients:

Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Taurine, Flaxseed, Vitamins/Minerals

Each of their foods only comes from one protein source, so if she's had trouble with chicken, you may want to start out with their lamb version..
