Dog allergic to collar?

I recently got a 3 1/2 year old newfoundland. She had never worn a collar previously. Now that she has one on, her hair is either rubbing off or falling out. Could she be having some kind of reaction? I know its not too tight. I keep a close eye on that.

Some collars can cause the pets hair to fall out. If it a flea collar take it off immediately and see your vet. If it is a regualr collar, take it off, buy a simple chain collar to place over hte dogs head. It will never get too tight. But regardless you should take her to the vet. Best Wishes!

I think your dog is alergic to the collar, try getting a different material collar, my dog got spots from being alergic to her collar, get like a nylon collar.

are you sure she's not scratching alot? just liek when you first put a coller on a puppy, dogs that have never had a coller on before will scratch at it to try to get the annoyance off their neck. as most collars are leather or nylon, an allergice reaction is very likely but is always a possibility. take her to the vet and she what they say. her fur could just be brittle and is thus breaking and becoming sparse from the friction of the collar

it's just rubbing off.when a dog gos without a collar for that long the hair has to get use to it

They have thick fur %26amp; yes, it can cause problems epsecially if or when combined with flea collars ( which are not good to use anyway, especially on heavily furred dogs ) do not leave the collar on except when walking the dog is your best bet...and harnesses are better %26amp; safer as well, but only when walking them, not left on...Take Care :)

some dogs just have that kind of hair. Collars rub off the hair on my Shar Pei's too. So I only make them wear the collars when we are out walking, inside of the house they go without.

The constant rubbing of the collar on her skin makes the hair fall out. I don't put a collar on my little chihuahua unless we are going for a walk or any other outing. If it's not necessary to always have a collar on her then I'd suggest leaving it off otherwise just loosen it more so that it doesn't rub as much. The best of luck to you and your pup.

if it's a standard nylon collar, than no, the dog's not allergic. dogs who where collars have thinner hair in the area of the collar because of the constant rubbing of the collar against the fur - even if the collar fits right.

also, as another person mentioned, the dog's not used to wearing a collar, so he may be scratching at it, and the excess scratching would cause the hair to fall out.

if it's not your standard nylon collar, and is instead, a flea collar or something, then yes, it's possible that the dog is allergic and you should go to walmart and buy yourself the standard, run-of-the-mill $5 nylon collar.

Hair falling out in any canine can be from a multitude of reasons. What is she eating? Many dogs have grain allergies which will cause them to itch to begin with and having something up against thier skin like a collar could irritate an already itchy situation. She could be allergic to the collar, but those allergies are rare. I would look for other underlying problems. Then again, Newfoundlands are a long hair type and it could just be getting caught up in the collar. My advice: Ditch the collar, try a different material and/or metal, if it doesn't start clearing up soon find a small pet store and see if they carry a brand called Innova Evo. It may be as simple as a pre-existing grain allergy in conjunction with the collar rubbing. I would also take her to the vet and get some dewormer just in case she's picked up a case of ringworm. I hope this helps!

only put a rolled leather buckle collar on - this won't break the hair.. also,, you really only need to put a collar on when you put a leash on.. other than that no collar

Dog allergic to collar?

Dogs can be allergic to collar materials. However, in your case it sounds more like the collar is rubbing/breaking the hair off than an allergic reaction. If you've ever really looked at dogs who wear collars all the time, usually the fur around the neck under the collar is much shorter than the rest of the coat. This is especially the case with long haired dogs.

If it bothers you, you could try switching to a rolled leather collar as they are supposed to be less likely to cause the hair to break. Or, you could just not leave the collar on 24-7. Personally, I prefer not to leave collars on my dogs when we aren't out for a walk or traveling. Not only is it safer for the dogs (they can't get the collar caught on something and strangle the dog when you're not there) but it's safer for the collars. One of my dogs will destroy her collars (even properly fitted collars) if I leave them on unattended. Not to mention that collars stay cleaner and last longer if you only use them when you need to.
