How Do I Stop My Dog's Manic Spinning/Behavior?

My dog Apollo is a very silly and energetic Border Collie, and when he was a puppy, he developed a strange habit of folding in on his head to reach his tail. He'd take his tail in his mouth and then run with it, ripping out his tail hair. He still does this to this day, and we've tried to get him to stop without success. Is there any way to stop this or at least get him to calm down a bit?

You need to see "The Dog Whisperer". Cesar Millan would tell you that it's because the dog needs more walking and with a choke collar, to make sure he knows YOU are the boss. The dog apparently believes he is the "Alpha" dog and you need to show him your dominance. Please watch his show or rent the CD's. The spinning is pretty normal for a herding dog. If he's literally ripping out his hair as you have described, you could try spraying it with some "Yuck Mouth", which is a very unpleasant concoction available at PetSmart, and stronger than Bitter Apple Spray.

You might consider enrolling your dog in some classes to learn agility course, flyball, etc- things that will challenge him and maybe he will not be so frustrated and going for his tail so much. You have a high energy dog breed. So do I. I have an Aussie mix and sometimes she spins just like Taz. She doesn't pull any hair out of her tail though. Romps in parks seem to satisfy her exercise needs and she has two "sisters" to play with as well.

why stop it don't you think watching a dog chasing his tail funny! only joking what you could try is. get a pot and full it with something like rice. each time it goes to do it shake the pot so it makes a load noise and the dog will stop what its doing after a wile he wont do it any more. this will work when train dog to stop doing anything. as far as calming him down lots and lots of exercise(u know that anyway) collies are working dogs so if they don't get the exercise mental and physical they go abit mad

It's mainly caused by bordom. How much do you exercise him? Border Collies need more than just a daily walk. They need mental stimulation as well. You need to get him a job such as herding, agility, flyball, obedience, rally or SOMETHING! Border Collies are very smart, but they can learn bad habits just as fast as the good ones. Even just teaching him tricks for 10 minutes a day will really help you out.

When he starts it up, you need to teach him a different behavior to diverte his attention. Such as an automatic down, sit or something. Just teach an alternate behavior to stop the spinning. I wouldn't put him in time out or anything because he could still do the behavior. Don't laugh, yell or make a big deal or it could make it worse. You need to be firm, calm and collected. Be patient and consistant. Make him listen. Work on your alternative behavior untill he knows it 110%. That way when you ask for it, he better do it. If he doesn't completely understand waht you're asking for, it won't do you any good.

When Border Collies get bored, they come up with new behaviors to diverte their built up energy. These are not lay around the house kind of dogs. They were bred to work and they need to have something to do. Playing fetch, learning tricks or getting envolved with a dog sport will help you out a lot! He needs a job.

Dogs can develop compulsive behaviors, just like people. In order to change a behavior you need to not only stop it, but replace it with another behavior. Can you distract your dog with a frisbee or ball when he starts spinning? Dogs get better at behaviors they get to practice and Apollo sounds like he's had a long time to get better at tail chasing. If your dog has solid foundation in obedience you can get the dog to refocus on you when he's going to spin. You can also note what precedes the spinning and anticipate it and prevent it from happening before it starts. Get your dog to do other things, sit, lie down, shake, etc. A behaviorist might help you to figure out if you have an OCD that might benefit from meds.
