My dog wont go to the groomers!! Help?

He went twice when he was a pup and then all of a sudden decided enough was enough!! When he needs his hair cut now we have to take him to the vet to be sedated and obviously i dont like doing this. But it gets so bad that he wont even let us brush him that it seems the only option. Any tips that anyone could give me so i could do it myself would be great, I've tried so much!!

My dog wont go to the groomers!! Help?

Ok what you have to understand is dogs live in the now. What happened when he was a pup is not why he doesnt like to be groomed. This is your problem. Not the dogs.

The dog does not respect you. Dogs are not little humans, they are dogs. You must be the boss or the dog will be the boss. You see, dogs have instincts that dictate pack order, there must always be a leader and if you dont become the leader than the dog will be it. Dogs are not happy being the leaders so we must be. for our safety and for theirs. Just think, since your dog doesnt see you as a leader he can choose not to listen to you, what if he gets out one day and you call him back and he decides he would rather go and play with a dog across the street and he gets hit by a car, all becuase you cant do what it takes to be a responsible dog owner.

You must earn his respect by becomeing his leader. Do this by takeing him on walks, and teaching him to walk next to you, (like on the dog whisperer), next establish that the house and yard belong to you, do this by claiming space (make him move, instead of walking around him) Also you must go out of doors and up stairs first this makes you the leader. Then work with his grooming problems, put a leash on him and get out your brush and start to brush him, if he snaps or dances around give a bit of a jerk on his leash and say sit. and do it again. Work this out until he can do it. Being a leader does not mean you are mean. You do not hit your dog, your dogs feelings are not hurt in fact he will be releaved to be a follower again.

Good luck with your dog I am tired of typing now.

Keep working with him at home. Play with his nails if he gets nail trims at the groomer. Play with his hair too. My trainer taught me to do this for my own dog. We had a vet that used a dremel (the grinding tool) on his nails when he was a pup, and now he is terrified to have his nails trimmed, even with normal clippers. We don't have to sedate him, but we do have to put a muzzle on him still during nail trims, and I have to get right up in his face and talk to him calmly and sweetly to keep him from thrashing and trying to get away from the groomer. It can be done, but it will take a lot of work on your part.

Sounds like something bad happened when he was last at the groomers. When you stroke him does he get agitated? If not start by using a soft cloth in your hand when you are stroking him and gradualy build up to a brush. When I say gradualy I mean take weeks if necessary rather than days. If you can build a good relationship with a different groomer take him along for visits where he gets fussed but nothing he thinks of as 'nasty'. I know my groomer would be more than happy to do this. Give him lots of time and love and he'll get there in the end.

Good luck

can you tell us the breed age that would help firstly is he nervous about things like hair dryers, clippers and hairdryers are noisy you need to gently break his fear try getting a wide comb and brush a stock or two talk to him in a happy good boy voice and reward him try again later for a bit longer if he will let you give him a positive experience and try not to be anxious he will sense this if hes scared of hair dryers etc put them on in a room near by for a while he will get used to the noise and will relies that it wont hurt him

You can try to give your dog a bath at home and brush him at home. He obviously had bad experiences at the groomer and now he associates that with each time he goes, and he does not want to re-experience that again. Would YOU?

So in the mean time, just brush him like 10 minutes twice a day, try to touch his nails, also you can clean his ears out with this solution you buy from your vet. I give my pups a bath right away at 4 weeks, to start them getting used to it. I give them a good short bath each time. No more than 10-12 minutes per dog. If they like it in there, I let them have some fun and bring toys in there. Dogs are real adaptable when they are still young, I hope your dog is under a year, it will be easier to help him to love his bath time, and bond with you:)

First may i ask what kind of dog you have?

Second it sounds like you have a dominance/ behavioral issue.

I groom a lot of dog who don't like coming in, or won't let their owners work with them. Mostly its because people over indulge their pets and never take issue with the dog's bad behavior. Some dogs are just plain bad and have to be sedated to be groomed. But this is often much safer than fighting with the groomer, attacking the grooming equipment or just making itself a stressed freak for a day.

Good grooming begins with a well mannered dog. So sign up for some classes and talk to your groomer about working with your dog at home. I'm sure they would be happy to offer their help. Grooming is not optional if you have a high maintenance breed.

Good luck and good luck to your groomer.

Also why does everyone want to blame the groomer for a bad grooming experiance? You all work in my shoes for a day and most of you would quit in two hours after having bad grooming experiances with some people's dogs. Ever been bit in the face? The hands? Your breast??!!!! Don't knock the groomer until you can do it yourself.

Proffessional training may give the answer. If that fails, seeing a dog behaviourist and follow appropriate therapy is the next step.

Good luck

Sounds as if you need to take him to training classes - not letting you brush him is a sign that he's getting his own way too much. You need to be much firmer with him or you will have even bigger problems in the future. He needs disciple in his life.
