Yesterday, I noticed my dog bleeding a bit from a place on his hip. Today it's worse...?

Yesterday, I just assumed he had accidently scratched himself. But today there's a place about the size of my fist that there is no hair and no top skin. The fur around it is stained with blood. It almost looks like a bad burn.

But during the day while I'm at school and work he stays in a lot, and I looked around and couldn't find any signs of sharp fencing or anything with hair and blood on it. I wonder if he's biting himself over anxiety. Or does anyone else know what it could be? Should I take him to the vet in the morning?

Advice, please!

You might want to consider a trip to the vet. I had a cocker mix whose back end stayed that way all summer long, and a quick trip to the vet determined that she was allergic to grass and itched herself raw. There is a great product (OTC) called Sulfodene that works for itch on dogs. Or it could be more serious than that. I would check with the vet -- they can determine what is making him scratch, and suggest what you need to do to help him out.

Vet soon as possible. If it is anxiety a shot and some cream may be the fix. My dog got a bite from a bug that caused a hot spot. They shaved the area and used a cream and she was fine.

it could be fleas and comb him and if no fleas yeah take him to the vet

It's best to take him to the vet. It could be that he's chewing on hiimself from anxiety but it could also be something more serious. And it sounds like it got much worse in a pretty short time period. Hope he gets better!

Might be something called a "hot spot", my cocker gets them sometimes, I use mercuroclear spray ( you should be able to get it at your local drugstore or supermarket).

It is possible he is pulling his hair out of stress. That will need a vet trip. My cat had that problem when we moved and she needed a couple of needles, and then it was gone for good. If it is stress you will need to attend to it quickly as it can then become a habit, even after the stress leaves, he will always do it. If this is all of a sudden, something new has triggered this stress. Can you think of anything that has changed, or are there loud noises in the neighbourhood, people fighting? See if you can take away the cause. If you don't have much money, I would wait a week to see if it clears up. If not, he really should see a vet. He could have scratched himself on anything, and the scratch just irritated him so he chewed it to relieve himself. It may not be a stress thing at all. Goodluck!

Take him to the vet as soon as possible. You do not want it to get infected.

Yes,take him to the vet, pronto!I had this happen to one of my dogs and the wound had to be stitched closed and she had to take antibiotics for ten days .If you don't have it taken care of ,the spot will get bigger, and get infected as well.I don't know what happened to my dog either;since I have other dogs,I assume it was caused by a fight, but she could have caught it on the fence or on a branch as well.I'll never know. But yes,I would take the dog to the vet ASAP.
