my mom has a mixed terrier dog, she is about 6 years old. About 2 months ago, she started acting strange, not eating, arching her back, shaking etc, they took her to the vet, they charged $500 just for tests, still wasnt sure, but guessed that it was PANCRITIS. She still wasn't not better 2 weeks later so they took her back, but they were goi g to charge even more, and they dont just have thousands of dollars laying around, well its been 2 months and she still acts sick off and on. some days she is fine others not..she is losing gobs of hair, sores on her chest, arching her back alot, laziness. do you have any idea what it could be? possibly a terminal cancer?

I think it might be cancer because my uncles dog had cancer and it lost gobs of hair, you could try going to a different vet or maybe even the humane society has some tips.

It sounds like a serious disease that will eventually be the demise of the pet. Even if you do take it to the vet, they will just give it medication to keep it comfortable untill it is ready to die. I would consider euthanizing the pet.

All i know is that it doesnt sound like pancreatitis. You see vomiting and diarrhea with that condition.. sometimes they will arch their back due to abdominal pain. Id take her to a different veterinarian for a 2nd opinion and have the first vet fax all records so they dont repeat any tests already done.

Call other vets tell them the problem, how much was charged and if the dog still has the same problems. Other vets might have more knowledge. Sounds like the dogs immune system is deteriorating..If she brought the dog to the vet, thats all she can do besides giving him as much love and attention as possible. You need to get a second opinion, 6 is a very young age for a dog. Whoever said 6-10 is an average lifespan for a dog is an idiot, that's like saying 40-60 is the average lifespan for a human.

You need to learn that your dog is more important that how fat your wallet is, if you cannot afford the treatment for this dog, who is OBVIOUSLY SUFFERING HORRIBLY, you need to relinquish her to an agency that will pay for her treatments and adopt her out to a family that IS willing to pay for such treatments, or euthanize her. Don't allow her suffering to continue.

Arching her back makes me suspect IVDD or Lumbo-Sacral Intervetebral Disc Disease...you may try to crate her making sure she doesn't jump ON of off furniture and short leash walks to urinate and defecate only. These symptoms can also indicate thyroid disease (hair loss) but should have been picked up with the blood tests.

It might be Lymphoma. I'm not sure, but it seems to be it. Make sure his x-rays show healthy bones. If they look weird, I think you found the cancer.

First off, a dogs immune system is much different than our own, it can withstand things that would kill us, but we are also immune to things that can kill them.

But the question is, why would you even ask what it is. The animal is suffering and finding out whats wrong can't cure it, there is no proven treatment that works on cancer in dogs, you can just extend their life span. My suggestion is to put it down, its a sad realization, but its the only humane thing to do.
