My dog has possibly scratched her cornea, what kind of treatment does that take?

I have a 3 year old hound mix. I noticed that one of her eyes was watering and she keeps blinking it. When I held her head and looked at her eye it looked like she had a curved, thin scratch about 1/4 of an inch long on her cornea. I blinked her eyelid to see if it was a hair and it didn't move or change shape, so I'm really thinking it was a scratch. I'm not sure how it happened. We have a cat and a toddler, or she may have done it when she got into the garbage earlier. We'll be taking her to the vet, but what will they do? I know it can turn into an ulcer if it isn't taken care of, so how do they prevent it?

If that's what it is they will put a solution in her eye to define the problem and prescribe an ointment type eye drop to treat it. In a few days it will be as good as new. If it's a scratch no surgery will be needed.

the vet will exam it to be sure its a scratch. He will most likely prescribe an an ointment to protect it, prevent further irritation/infection, and to help heal it.

Your vet will probably give you some antibiotic eye ointment to apply to her eye. This will protect, soothe her eye and fight any infection. They eye heals very quickly. You may even see relief by the time you take her to the vet.

She could have scratched it by rubbing it.

I would think that the treatment would be the same for a human. A few antibiotic drops at the vets office should be it. The eyes heal very quickly.

Take it to a vet, maybe they will exam it to be sure it was scratched. But it needs some OPERATION here. I'm serious.

in humans all you need to do is pad the eye .I guess the same principle holds

I actually did this to myself when I was 7 or 8. I got some medicine and an eye patch and was good as new in a few days. I also had a boxer growing up that got an ulcerated cornea and she got eye medicine and had to wear an elizabethan/satellite collar for a little while to make sure she couldn't scratch or bump her eye and re-injure it. Eyes tend to heal pretty well, but you're doing the right thing by taking her to a vet early. The treatment isn't too much trouble, she'll be fine. Good luck!

First they will stain the eye with special stuff for the eye that you turn the light out and scratches or ulcers glow bright green. They basically treat a scratch as a ulcer with a ointment called BNP. If it is really bad you will have a couple of ointments and if painful drops to kill the pain. I have had a eye that was so bad I had to get up every 2 hours to put drops in for 3 days then 4 times a day after! Definintly do not put off having it checked out or worse case senario they could lose an eye. You can't really prevent it from happening...things happen. We get something in our eye and can pick it out with a dog it could be something so simple as a grass clipping but they can only rub n rub resulting in ulcers. Good luck.
