I have a black lab/doberman male dog and he is 10 1/2 years old. Recently he has been gagging a lot.

He has been doing this for the last 3 months. I have not changed his food or anything. He doesn't throw up anything, he just gags all the time like as if he is going to bring up a hair ball. (if he were a cat that is) Does anybody know why a senior dog has started to do this?

I'd get him to a vet. I hate to tell you this, mine (a shepherd) did this and he had a tumor on his spleen. He still acted like himself playing and protecting. Unfortunately I had to decide to not lengthen his discomfort, surgery was no guarantee of his survival, which would not have been fair to put him through. This may not be the case with your dog, but please find out if he has any type of digestive issues, maybe gerd like us humans get or heart issue and it can be corrected/controlled with medication. I hope all turns out well. Give him a hug for me.

I think three months is too much time to have gone by without seeing the vet. Make an appointment %26amp; let the vet examine your dog!!!

Don't leave it to the last min to find out the hard way ,take him to your local vet.

He could have kennel cough-caught from another dog, or a small object has damaged or is lodged in his throat, post-nasal drip, or major organ failure. Your vet can tell you which.

Take your dog to the vet!

Your dog could have ate something which it is stuck down there and is trying to bring it up.

You need to get him to the vets asap. In an older dog like him it is not unusual to develop a tumour. If it is a tumour and it gets to big he could choke to death and axphyxiate.

would he have a collapsed trachea my 13 year old dog sometimes makes a hacking noise although that is usually caused by pulling on the lead that is one suggestion.i am not sure what gagging is .
