Long hair chihuahua - AKC help!?

My long-hair chihuahua is registered in the AKC (American Kennel Club). She is pure bred. The AKC standard says chihuahuas are not supposed to weigh more than 6 pounds but my chihuahua weighs 8 pounds. Are they going to kick her out of their kennel club if they find out my dog has gained some weight?

Long hair chihuahua - AKC help!?

No they won't kick her out because she doesn't meet the standard. The standard is what breeders are suppose to go by when breeding...dogs that don't meet the standard should not be bred and they can't be shown in conformation.

Most Pets don't meet the standard in one way or another. This is why resp[onsible breeders sell them with spay/neuter agreements %26amp; limited registration.

No, most dogs do not fit the AKC standard of the way the ideal dog is supposed to look and that is why most dogs are (or should be) sold as pets. If she is truly oversized and not just fat, your breeder should have sold her to you as a pet with a limited registration.

No that's just the standard they prefer but she wouldn't be able to be shown since she is "over sized"

Where I live it's very hard to get one under 8 pounds most are closer to 12-14 pounds but still AKC registered.

If she is a pet just spay her and love her as a nice little pet if you want to breed make sure you find a Small male preferably 4-5 pounds to try to compensate for the weight.

The AKC standard Say's a dog under 6 pounds...Good responsible breeders don't breed dogs that are over the size limits....if you want 5 pound puppies at maturity the only way to get that is to breed 5 pound adults together that came from 5 pound adults that came from 5 pound adults. It takes several generations to get uniformity in size .....How over sized chihuahuas happen is, from BYB's , puppymills and inexperienced breeders that think if you take a 12 pound female and use a small male on her you'll balance out the size of the puppies(puppymills like to breed a huge female to a small male so the risk of c-section is less and profit is increased and litters of 8-9 are common) , But all you'll get from breeding different size dogs are some huge puppies like mom and some small ones like daddy. The AKC is just a registry, they will register any size chihuahua if the breeder registered the litter and once you registered your puppy they can't take the reg away even if you told them she was 8 pounds. .
