my dog is about two years old and she is constantly biting and scratching at her legs. she doesnt have fleas or mites. and i've been cutting (shaving) her hair so it is short and its been helping but she still does it all the time. is it like a nervous habbit like biting your nail?? i dont no.

Food allergies.

Corn, wheat, soy, milk, beef and chicken all cause skin probems.

Switch her food. Look into Innova EVO (it's doing great things for allergic pets) California Natural, Artemis, Wellness and Canidae.

NEVER feed Science Diet, Purina or Iams. It's all but poison to dogs. Anything at pet stores, grocery stores, Walmart, Target is bad food and will make your dog sick.

It could be allergies to something else. My dog goes through this every August and September. The vet just says give him an antihistimine (he prescribed the strength) and let it go. I've had three vets look at this and since it is seasonal, they say it is something in the environment. Try to keep a journal of when it is worse so that you can narrow it down to what it might be. Is it worse on days that you clean? Do you put something on the floors? Is it worse when you go for a walk through a certain area? Could be a plant. Is it worse when you open a new bag of food? Could be the food. Try to find the triggers.

Does your dog get enough mental activity and play and walking?

Is your dog bored and driven to obsessive behaviour?

Or perhaps your dog is suffering from cheap non nutritive dog food.

I would take the dog to the vet, discuss these issues and come to the bottom of the problem.
