It can take up to several weeks of treatment to completely get rid of it all depending on how bad it was. Its probablly black because the sores are healing up a scabbing over. Just hang in there. As long as it is looking better and their hair is starting to grow back it should be working fine. Like I said it can take several weeks for ir to completely clear up.

A long time ago had a pound puppy with it. Sorry, can't remember how long it took to treat. Try calling the vet up and ask if it's healing or needs another round of treatment. Tell them your strapped for $, and ask if you can just get the meds without bringing the dog in %26amp; having to pay another office visit......does get expensive doesn't it? A good vet wouldn't charge you again, only for the meds, seeing as it's a continuing treatment.

Take your dog to the vet again because if you don't get rid of it completely it will come back and you will have to start all over again. Either you find the money now or you pay double to treat it when it comes back. I was going to get a dog from the SPCA and it had mange and they wouldn't let me take him until he was completely cured. Its not healthy

Paramite --- it does wonders!! You have to buy it from the vet but it kills mange and mites and fleas and ticks and practically everything else. You mix a little of it (the vet will tell you how much) with water and either dip the dog or pour it over the dog -- or you can even wipe it on the affected spots with a damp washcloth. You do this once a week for 6 weeks. By the 3rd week, you should see a major improvement. The dog will feel better after the first treatment. Good luck and God bless you for taking in stray animals!!

Does he have sarcoptic or demodectic mange? These are caused by two different mange mites, and treatment, etc. is different.

I have an adopted puppy now 7 months that has had demodex ( demodectic mange) since we adopted her. It has been a battle for us to cure, and still is. I have spent hOURS and HOURS researching this. If this is what your dog has, you can email me. I can tell you what we have done so far, what our vet says, and what I have learned. :-)

Did your vet tell you which kind of mange the dogs have? There is one kind, which is curable and contageous to other dogs. It just requires good treatment to clear up. The other kind is a genetic thing. My friend's Bulldog has it. Basically, all dogs have these "mites" which cause this mange, but most have proper immune systems to fight them off and never have a problem. With my friends dog, it's the genetic kind that is this... not contageous, but also never comepletely curable, only managable by treatments.

The vet told my friend, that once it gets cleared up, it could be 2 months, 6 months, a year or even two years, before another break out will happen and they will have to go thru a few months of treatment again. So this kind can be managed, but never cured.

You should ask the vet which kind it is your dog has. I know that for the kind that isn't curable, my friend went thru 2 months of treatment to clear it up and have been free of breakouts for 3 months now, with fingers crossed that it doesn't pop up again soon.
