My 4 year old male sharpei dog has suddenly started to growl at me when I try to pet him. Any ideas

He has never done this before, but lately if I go near his bed or just try to pet him he has become unpredicable as to whether he will growl, his ears drop back and his back hair stands up. How should I handle this? Should he be smacked? Screamed at, locked up as punishment???? He has never bitten but he is aggressive toward other dogs and is not neutered. He has always been very loving towards me...what is going on?

Hello

I would first and foremost rule out any health probelms. But if you have done that and he checks out fine this is most likely a case of domiannce related aggression. You said that he is aggressive towards other dogs, and generally when a dog has any kind of aggression is more likely that they will develop another kind. (there are basically 3 kinds of aggression, aggression towards dogs, aggressions towards people, and dominance related aggression.) Most dogs develop dominance related aggression because they are confused or unsure of their place in the family, this can occur if there have been any drastic changes in your household (moving, new people, children, change of furniture). There are so many reasons that this can happen that I can't really go over them all.

My advice is that you should hire a dog trainer fairly soon. If this is new behavior then it will be much easier to fix that if he is allowed to display this behavior for an extended period of time. Now I could give you the advice for you to deal with this on your own, but I dont have all the information and I have not had the opportunity to see this behavior for myself and I would hate to be misdiagnosing you and giving you the wrong advice that would cause your problem to get worse. Thats why I would strongly advise you to hire a trainer. But be very careful who you hire, because you need a dog trainer who has had experience treating aggression before and you'll need someone who will actually fix your behavior (ie, correct the dog for the bad behavior) as opposed to just masking the behavior as many trainers will do. (this can include distracting the dog when he is being aggressive or avoiding any issues that could lead to aggression.) Look for a trainer that will set your dog up to display the behavior and then correct him for displaying bad behavior and praise/reward him for good behavior.

Be very careful though that you are not doing any kind of training that you are not comfortable with. The mark of a good trainer is the ability to compromise and be flexible. If they propose a correction that you are not comfortable with then you shoudl tell them that and they should be able to come up with a better correction for you, or you shoudl switch trainers. (and by correction I mean a method of disiplining your dog for bad behavior. and I am not an advocate for physical corrections, so I strongly advise you to avoid people who use those, ie hitting, alpha roll, flank pull etc...). There are many others that you can use that are more effective.

I really hope you can get this problem in check, I advise that you work on the dog aggression as well, if only for your peace of mind. I wish I were able to help you more than this, but I hope I was some help at least.

Good Luck!

You should immediatly make a call to your vet. When dogs suddenly become aggresive with you or other pets it is usally a sign that something is wrong. He could be feeling sick, he could be injured. Remember it is often very hard to tell that an animal is sick. So even if he doesnt appear sick he could be. Do not hit the dog or lock him up. Just try to get him to a vet and he can help.

He maybe hurting some where and may not want you to touch him because it causes him pain. I would call your vet and check to see what he/she saids.

u should take him to the vet and get him tested for any diseases . the outcome might not be a good one, but you have to have him checked.

This is truly a psychological problem. The dog is insecure and dominate. You should never punished or hit the dog sometimes the owners are the ones to blame.

Your dog is territorial, if he is not spayed spay him. Show him who's boss. When your dog growls at you. Don't be afraid because it will make the problem worse. Go to his bed calmly and assertively, take control over the bed. The dog will soon realize the bed is a privilege and your in charge of the bed. DON'T pet the dog because it rewards the behavior you can only pet the dog when he knows your in charge and he is calm submissive.

Call your vet, this may be serious. Maybe he does not have enough food, or you aren't taking that good care of him. Why not give him some time alone for a few days and he will realize what he has done as a punishment.

I would definitely take your dog to the vet. There has to be something wrong with him. If he has never acted like this in the past he might be in pain or is seriously ill.

These dogs are know to have skin problems from the wrinkles where the hair pokes into the skin. Might look into that. Might hurt him when you try to pet him.
