What signs to look for when a dog is in heat?

This is my first female dog and she is 8 months old. I have heard you should wait to have your dog spayed if it's a large breed...which she is. I don't know how true this is but we are getting her spayed next month and she will be 9 months old.

I don't think she is in heat or ever has been yet...what would I look for? She is white and the hair around her private is dark. I don't think its blood cuz it's been like that since we got her. Maybe like a tear stain type thing. White dogs tend to have red tear stains under their eyes due to moisure or being wet. She has no tear stains on her face...just her private.

The discoloration around the vulva is due to normal bacterial presence, and is nothing to worry about. You are right, it is the same process that causes tear stains, and in dogs that chew their paws, pink feet. Your female will usually have a show of blood to indicate heat, although they can go into a 'silent heat' where there is none. She will have a swollen vulva, and tend to be a tad cranky, or in some cases, more clingy. Of course, intact males from miles around will be at your doorstep wanting to have a date with her. She could very well not go into heat before she is spayed, and that wouldn't be a bad thing. If she does go in before she is spayed, consult your vet, as some prefer not to spay until a few weeks after a heat, to reduce chances of unnescessary bleeding. Good luck, and e-mail me if I can help.

What signs to look for when a dog is in heat?

maybe its just stains from peeing or dirt, a dog in heats vulva(private) would be enlarged and the dog would pee outside constantly, soliciting attention from male dogs

Panting, Digging, Restlessness, Whining. Do not allow your dog outside without a leash during this time ever.

When your dog is in heat she will drip blood. It will be visible on the floor. If you've never noticed this, she hasn't gone into heat. She won't have a continuous flow like a human, but she will drip from time to time and stain your carpet. If she goes into heat before you get her spayed, you'll notice. You probably want to get doggie diapers made for dogs in heat, or buy some little boy boxer shorts and put a pad in them (you can put the tail up through the fly).

It's true that larger breeds go into heat later than smaller breeds. My labrador didn't go into heat until she was 13 months old. She bled, plus her nipples got bigger, and her vulva got much bigger. The most important thing to remember when your dog is in heat is to keep her away from males. Never let her outside unattended. You must watch her for about 3 weeks (sometimes more).

There is a study by Chris Zink suggesting that if you want to compete your dog in agility or other performance sport, to wait until 14 months to spay your dog. ( http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.h... ) Letting your dog develop normally with normal hormones in the body can be advantageous. Greater bone density and correct bone length are some of the advantages, and can prevent future injuries. HOWEVER, if you do wait to spay or neuter your dog, you have to be very responsible about it and never give your dog the opportunity to breed. If you are not sure if you can prevent matings, you should spay your dog before she goes into heat.
