My Shitzu doggie has many hard hair balls- tangled hair-what can I do to take these out?

I have adopted a dog for the first time-I had her groomed %26amp; nails done, shots, etc. about 2 months ago-but it is so cold here that I would rather not cut her hair for a few months. I have tried over the counter conditioners %26amp; vitamins? Help! I feel so bad for her, it hurts her when I brush her hair.

You have to get them cut out if it hurts.

I know its cold, but go and get her hair cut anyway. I'm so glad you adopted her, but shih-tzus are a HUGE commitment in the grooming department!

Cold or not, go out and get her groomed down to a puppycut. Buy her a sweater specifically for winter. My 12 year old Shih-tzu has only three sweaters, and wears them when her hair is short in the winter. And she loves the snow, too!

After that, make a commitment to brush her fur at least every other day once it starts growing out again. Not a fullblown brushing, just a quick brush through to check for mats. Give her a complete brushing once a week.

Mats can get very painful, and if it gets tangled enough, it can cause EXTREME skin problems. Please, for her sake, take her to the groomer.

Conditioners and vitamins wont help, the mat wont just fall out. It doesn't hurt her when you brush her, unless you pull. With mats, there's nothing you can do but cut them out. If you REALLY dont want to groom her, just snip them out with scissors(careful!) and then brush her gently.

You have to have your shih-tzu groomed about once a month if you don't plan to brush her everyday. We brush my girl every few days, but in her old age her fur grows slower. We used to get her groomed about every four months, and by the time we did, she looked like a walking dust mop! But we kept her brushed so we never had a matting problem. Now it grows alot slower, so we can get her groomed maybe every four or five months. I'm not quite sure why it grows so slowly now...

Anyway, Good luck with your new Shih-tzu, I'm sure she'll be a good addition to your family! I'm delighted to see someone out there adopting instead of buying. They need rescue!

if the matts are bad you might have to actually get them cut out, i would take him to a groomer

even with it being cold i would cut out the knots cause they can pull on their skin so bad it can cause a infection

you can buy these brushes that have sort of razors in them. they cut the matted hair and separate knots. i'm not sure what they are called but i seen them at target.

it's best to brush and comb long hair dogs daily or every 2 days.. if you don't keep up with it, this is the result. also, you could try shampooing your dog first and adding conditioner before your brush her, but use dog-safe products.

ADD: here is an example of what i mean. it's a brush but one side is sharp and cuts matts and tangles. make sure to brush away from your dog's skin

Hair that is this tightly matted CAN be saved, but since you are saying that the dematting process hurts her, you might just be better off just getting the tangles cut out depending on how close to the skin they are. Regardless of the weather, ShihTzus should see a groomer every 6-10 weeks, of course depending on how often and how thoroughly you maintain the coat in between groomings. If you simply brush once a week, she needs to be seen every six weeks. If you thoroughly comb her out 2-4 times a week, she can go up to 10 or 12 weeks before going back to a groomer.

If the matts are really that bad at the moment, to save the dog from the distress of brushing them out, you can either cut them out with scissors in the most likely area (armpits, backs of legs, belly etc) or have her shaved short to start afresh.

around the home she should be fine, but when she goes out you could always get her a little coat to pop on until its grown back.

Anti tangle shampoos are a good idea, perhaps ask your groomer to use these on her next time she goes, and make sure you brush her daily once its sorted to stop it happening again.

the best idea would be taking your doggie to the groomer. Do not do what my cousin did. Maybe, he felt like he can groom his own shitzu, he trimmed all the tangled hair. His shitzu ended up looking really stupid because of the stupid looking layered haircut he made after. In the end, I was surprised to see he decided to shave all the fur off. His shitzu looks really scary right now.

this might sound a bit weird, but i have used peanut butter and olive oil to get rid of those matts. and it works!

You can get a de-matting comb or clip them out very carefully. Mats are painful for the dog! Brush her every day at least once. Think of it as time to bond with your new dog. This will keep her mats from coming back.

I would just take her into a groomer and get all her hair cut off. She will be so much more comfortable. Plus this way you can spend more quality time doing things that are fun instead of pulling on her hair.
