Why can't you breed this dog?

I heard that you shouldnt breed the wooly coat siberian husky for Long hair is NOT a desired trait. I think its ourdy. but thats besides the point. Is their any pecific reason? Is it a mutation or something? Like the long haired ferret? Of course dogs and ferrets arent the same but anyways.

Whats so bad about it?

Why can't you breed this dog?

While there is no health issue associated with it (other than matting if not properly cared for), that type of coat is not desirable on a Siberian because it would not be able to do its job properly.

A "woolly" coat is a soft coat, with little to no guard hair to protect the undercoat from the elements. A woolly Siberian would likely die in its native climate, mostly due to the elements easily getting through the soft, woolly coat and to the skin. The coat gathers snowballs/ice easily, separates into chunks, and exposes the skin.

On the other side of the coin, a woolly-coated Siberian could easily overheat while pulling a sled in 20-30 degree temperatures.

This is the reason it is not considered acceptable per our Breed Standard. The Standard is based on functional ability.

There is just no good reason for that type of coat, and responsible breeders (especially those with direct experience working these dogs) do not breed for it. It may show up in a well-bred litter, as it is a genetic recessive, but those puppies are placed on spay/neuter contracts.

Hope this helps.

Why can't you breed this dog?

i bread a walrus and an eagle.... i call it a weaglrus......... i like it

Why can't you breed this dog?

It's not within breed standards. The point of breeding is to better the breed. If you breed a dog with a undesirable trait, then you've contradicted the point of breeding. You CAN breed that dog, but no good breeder ever would. When you breed, you want to find a dog who's as close to the breed standard as you can find. That dog just wouldn't fit the breed standard.

Why can't you breed this dog?

Because it is unethical to breed outside of the breed standard, which is like a blueprint of how the breed is supposed to look or act. If everyone breeds with no regard to the standard, then soon a Siberian husky won't be distinguishable from a German shepherd.

Why can't you breed this dog?

The Breeders of Siberian Huskies dont breed the wooly coat ones cause the are not of the standard. They breed for the AKC standard. (I believe you can register the dog and the pups but not show). Cockers are the asme way. I like the Sable but can not show them as the color is not a standard. It is not a solid nor is it a parti or tri. So I dont get one and would not breed one.

Stick to the Standards. Look it up on AKC.ORG.
