A lab retiever mix is loosing it's hair on the belly and hind legs - why?

I have a dog which is a lab retriever mix that is starting to loose her hair on the back hind legs. Her skin is becoming darker. The only symptom that I can see is some itching.

probably food or household allergies

in food AVOID - soy, wheat, corn, beef, pork, by-products

these are present in most cheap grocerystore wal mart foods

dogs do better with better quality food like from Pet food supply stores but even then you have to read the ingredients list because some crappy ones try to trick you into thinking they are good (like Science Diet, IAMs and Eukanuba are crap but trys to trick you)

or could be from household carpet cleaning products

or lice I forgot to mention lice

have your vet check her for allergies - it could be seasonal or allergies to her food....seasonal allergies do cause itching and redness - and most likely loss of hair - your vet can recommend a change in diet and/or medication to help ease her symptoms

Hello. I have a pug that did the same thing. It turned out to be a type of mange and he had to be dipped several times at the vet. It was expensive but it worked. They have to drip dry, so it was best to do it at the vet instead of at home, where it would be too messy. My advice is take the dog to the vet. Good luck!

I agree with allergies to something. If it starts to smell get her to a doctor right away

If you use Tide detergent that could be the problem. It has been known to irritate dogs skin and they pull their hair out. Switch if you do!

Good luck!

Have your recently changed her bedding/blankets? The stomach and back hind legs are the most likely to be affected if she is lying on a new material that is slightly abrading her. You might also look for irritation on the elbows. This can happen especially if the dog has recently been crated or boarded and spent longer-than-normal periods lying down.

It could also be ringworm, which is transmitable to people, so I'd definitely have her checked at the vet - better the $45 exam fee than ringworm on yourself.

Good luck.
