Why is my cat chewing out her hair?

A few years ago my long-haired cat chewed the hair off her tail. The vet said it was seasonal allergies. She now gets a shot at the beginning of the summer each year (no, she is NEVER let outside).

This worked well for a couple of years, but now she is chewing the fur off her back near her tail. She received an allergy shot in February, but it's still a problem. The vet gave her another shot in June and suggested having her shaved into a "lion cut" for the remainder of the summer.

She now looks like a poodle and is STILL chewing the fur off her tail. She was moved into a new house with a new cat in March, but her problems started BEFORE the move. She gets along very well with the new cat. My other two cats show no symptoms at all.

I've always thought she was a little bit "special" as she was treated roughly by the previous owner's hunting dogs and I honestly believe she suffered brain damage. Could this be an entirely psychological problem? My BF says she's just "emo". :P

It could very well be a "nervous tic" of some sort if she was constantly harassed by dogs before you got her. If the allergy shots don't seem to be working anymore has the vet checked for anything else? Maybe an issue with the skin around the tail? And might I add that you seem like a very caring cat owner. I love hearing about a cat like yours being taken from such a harsh environment and put somewhere that she's loved and cared for.

I have seen this with allergies AND behavioral issues. You could try the Feliway pheremone - comes packaged like a glade plug-in- releases pheremone that calms cats (we cant' detect it) have had clients say it helps. Good luck

It IS probably seasonal allergies, especially if the Depo/Cortisone shot helped. Alot of vets are trying to lower the doasge as much as possible when it comes to steroids, and you should mention to him that it was not as effective this treatment and he needs to increase the dose. The avg dose is 1 cc per 15-20 lbs, depending on if it is the first shot given in a while, or if he has been up to date on them.

KEEP IN MIND that the shots USUALLY only lasts 30 days, and he will need another dose. Your vet will tell you to wait until you see your cat itching again before you get the shot done, because you want it to last as long as possible, but dont wait too long to take him when you do see him!!

If he isnt going outside, it could very well be a food allergy, and you can ask about a Science Diet formula to try and see if this helps, but stay UTD on those shots!

If she was treated bad by previous owners and their stupid dogs (sorry), then that is most likely a nervous habit.

We took in Gordo a few months ago. He's a yr. old male neutered cat who is practically licking himself to death, as my vet put it. No sores. But no hair on tummy and in lots other places. He tries to get the other cats to lick in areas he can't reach!! My vet said we can do allergy testing which is expensive; haven't done it yet. My guess is someone left him when they moved because he was soooo skinny. He hung out with another cat, Mia, who was later adopted. He will NOT let us get near him unless we're feeding him.

I currently have him on Science Diet Sensitive Skin. She said try it for a good month. If that doesn't work she said there are novel protein diet foods out there (stuff with venisen, green pea.) She said if I asked the pet store people abt. it they should know. If none of that works, then I don't know what to say. We won't let him back out or give him to APL. She said as long as there are no sores he should be fine. It still makes me nervous when he does it though.

I don't agree with your vet saying to get a lion cut for your cat. That just seems like he/she wants to treat your cat %26amp; be done with her.

Ask abt. allergy testing and what the cost is at your vet. Also, ask your vet abt. a novel protein diet with the ingredients I mentioned above. Also ask abt. Science Diet Sensitive Skin-see what they think.

Good luck!

It does sound like it's emotional rather than allergies. My cat (shelter adoptee) chews and pees since my dad started getting ill then died. I did use pheremone spray and that sort of works. It works if you spray it non-stop and every place you can think of, several times a day. Plug -in same idea make sure it never runs out, and you have them in just about every place the cat goes. But, it doesn't work completely and it's pretty expensive, which is why I quit using it. Now, I'm just trying to watch him closely, give him more attention, and deal with it rather than spending lots of $$ for something that doesn't work all that well.

Animals are just like us, there are always a few nuts in the family and you just keep loving them and dealing with their issues lol!

Why is my cat chewing out her hair?

she is probably stressing herself out over something.

Why is my cat chewing out her hair?

I would say to go to a different vet and get a secend opinion cause what it may be is a more of a skin problem or maybe even dandruff, try giving her a bath with flea shampoo and wait a few days and see if she is still doing it. If she is then go and get a secend opinion from a different veternarian

Why is my cat chewing out her hair?

This happened exactly the same 2 my cat. This is because of depression. Did u take something away from her? Feeding her at the same schedules?

Think about what could've made her depressed, and change it.

And don't worry, the longest this stays for is usually a few months.

Good Luck!!!
