How can I make my dog gain weight?

I have a medium sized american eskimo. He's 3 and un-neutered. I experiment with all types of pet foods because he takes forever to eat one brand. He takes about a month to eat a $13 bag of Iams. Just to give you an idea. I leave his food out all day so he can nibble on it as much as he wants. i tried feeding him puppy food and mixing wet foods with it and he loves it but shortly after he throws it up. The vet said he is healthy except for being a little skinny. I feed him table foods and doggy snacks throughout the day but he is EXTREMELY active. Very playful. I have a feeling that he's not being nourished because his hair is shedding a lot. Maybe it's that time of the year for shedding but I've never seen anything like it. Any suggestions? I'm going to get him neutered even though my trainer recommended that I don't since it makes dogs fat and sloppy.

Your trainer is nuts to tell you not to neuter your dog. Neutering does not make them fat %26amp; sloppy and because of that comment I would seriously change trainers.

American Eskimo dogs are very active %26amp;are mostly fur rather than substance. I wouldn't worry about trying to get him to gain weight unless he was seriously thin. But, do change foods. Iams isn't the best of foods and there are many better ones out there. Try Nutro Natural Choice, Natural Balance, or Eagle Pack. Your dog may like a variety of foods as well. If he doesn't like chicken, try him on lamb (buy the small bags so that if he doesn't like them you aren't wasting a ton of money - you can donate what he doesn't eat to the local shelter). I buy the Natural Balance Potato %26amp; Duck as well as a lamb based food %26amp; mix them for my dog. I'll often mix in venison %26amp; sweet potato to give her a change of flavour as well

I don't believe that a dog should eat the same thing all the time although that's what they recommend. I think you should stick with a "base" food of chicken or lamb or beef %26amp; then you can mix in other flavours for variety. My dog has been very healthy %26amp; loves her food since I started doing this.

Regarding his shedding. That probably has to do with more the time of year but good food is essential. You can buy some flax seed oil %26amp; put it on his food to help with his skin %26amp; coat. Make sure you follow the directions on the bottle - too much of it %26amp; you'll have a mess to clean up. In fact I would start with less than what they recommend.

Again - the sooner you get your dog neutered the better.

Stand on top of it.

You shouldn't leave his food out all day! He should have a specific feeding time and dont leave him with his food for longer than 15 minutes. That way, he'll know that if he wants to eat, he has to eat it then. He can't just pick away at his food.

Change your vet, get a second opinion.

Sit on him the next time you weigh him... ok, stupid joke... I楹搈 sorry ;)

You should have your Vet check him out... could be cancer. Cancer is an appetite killer and it makes an organism loose weight.

Getting your dog neutered does not make them fat and sloppy. It makes them sane and ensures that no unwanted dogs will be born! You should feed your dog better food. Iams is crap and so are most other foods out there. Try this website: www.naturapet.com. You also shouldn't feed your dog table scraps...a lot of human food is poisonous to dogs and are really bad for them. You need to find a new vet who will help you with this.

Eskimo's tend to not hold a bunch of weight. Before you try to bulk up your dog talk to your vet and make sure your dog is infact under weight. Also, I know that my vet has a food that you can only get through a vet that is pure fat and packs on the pounds quickly.

I had a Silky couple years ago. He was very skinny. Her mother wasn't. We feed them same thing. But he still very skinny.

For health reason, we bought a Juicer to veg and fruit juice.

We figure, it was kind of waste to throw the reminding fiber from the fruit away. So we feed my dogs the reminding fiber left from the juicer. Guess what, the skinny one gain weight.

How can I make my dog gain weight?

a little bacon grease on his food, its what the old timers use to do, helps with coat also

but be careful of the table scraps, he is thinking why eat a bunch of crappy nuggets whe you can get a steak bone

but he needs the vitamins from the dog food

How can I make my dog gain weight?

Firstly,

The vet just said his skinny. Did the vet say he needs weight?

Why is it that you think your dog needs to gain weight?

Your dog may not need to gain weight. As long as he is healthy!!! Your Vet would be able to let you know what the average weight should be for your dog for a long, healthy life. Too much overweight can reduce a dog's life in years. Please check with him/her.

1st fire you're trainer.. Get you dog neutered! it's the best thing you can do for him. The food, try pedigree it has a high protein content... My dog had the same problem and I tried all the high brand pet foods and nothing was working... people shy away from this food and I'm not certain why. I put him on it when he was 11/2 years old and he lived until he was 18. his coat was great and he was very active hardly any health issues... I also included a fatty omega capsule for his skin and coat (you can get good ones at the vet about $15 for a 30 day supply) try it and see the out come. the most important thing right now is to get him to eat... you can also try adding a spoon full of wet food to add flavor and temptation.

How can I make my dog gain weight?

I assume you have had him vet checked...Could he have some kind of tape worm?....I too put dry food down for my dogs all day so they can nibble at will throughout the day and in the evening I give them wet food....I tried different wet foods until I found the packets of "Pedigree Little Champions"....They love it...and I have given up the search for now...They think it's "people food"...LOL...They finish it fast and I go back to the dry food during the day....You can buy this food in a 12 pack....

Good Luck with your baby!

my nutered german sheperd is very active and everyone said he was skinney for a while even the vet then we got regular dry food and mixed hamber meat or leftover stesk that nobody wants, or some kind of meat that he likes and he gained some weight no a lot and then the vet said that he was perfect so don't make him gain anymore weight but everyone else says he is still to skinney we still feed him meat with his dry food but not as much and that is only because now he won't eat regular dry food with out meat and we don't buy canned foods and never will because in my house canned food for dogs is cancer in a can!! Try what we did with your dog!

Oh yeah make sure the hamberger meat isn't raw cook it on the stove for a little while!! Hope I Helped!!

Keep his food out for 10min. What is not eaten gets put back. I would stop the canned food, it is usually just a temporary fix. Animals do not need the variety people do. Yes, he will be hungry for a few days but he'll get the point and start to eat when it is put down, especially at night which is also when he will get the best weight gain. Try giving him Iams cookies (puppy ones) they will give him good nourishment and help with weight gain. Remember though it is better a little under weight than over weight. A dog that size at 5pnds over weight is like you being 25pnds over weight.

How can I make my dog gain weight?

There are many reasons that could cause your dog to be thin

Worms Just to mention one. He may be a fuzzy eater. Canien diabetes,Hypothyroidism.Yes dogs can suffer from that as well as humans. You can read about it here:

Coat

The American Eskimo Dog has a stand-off, double coat consisting of a dense undercoat and a longer coat of guard hair growing through it to form the outer coat. It is straight with no curl or wave. There is a pronounced ruff around the neck which is more noticeable on dogs than bitches. Outer part of the ear should be well covered with short, smooth hair, with longer tufts of hair growing in front of ear openings. Hair on muzzle should be short and smooth. The backs of the front legs should be well feathered, as are the rear legs down to the hock. The tail is covered profusely with long hair. THERE IS TO BE NO TRIMMING OF THE WHISKERS OR BODY COAT AND SUCH TRIMMING WILL BE SEVERELY PENALIZED. The only permissible trimming is to neaten the feet and the backs of the rear pasterns.

Eskies require no special trimming or clipping, but they are heavy shedders. A grooming routine for an Eskie should include twice weekly brushing to help control shedding and maintain a shiny, mat-free coat. This is a breed that "blows it's coat" once or twice a year. During these periods of profuse shedding, daily brushing is needed. Unless more frequent baths are needed because the coat becomes soiled, bathing a few times a year is recommended.

They are hardy, healthy dogs with an average life span of about 15 years to as long as 18 years. Have a trusted Veterinarian perform regular health checks and vaccinations. Effective flea prevention is essential to prevent dermatitis which could go un-noticed beneath an Eskie's heavy undercoat.

Health problems

The American eskimo is a fairly healthy breed, although close

Attention should be paid to eyes and tear ducts.Prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy . its thick double coat should be kept clean and free of fleasthat can cause dermatitis. This breed can gain weight easily if it does not get

enough exercise.

How can I make my dog gain weight?

What kind of trainer would say that neutering makes a dog fat and sloppy????

It does not.

Overfeeding a dog and not giving it enough exercise makes dogs fat, just like it does to people.

Neutering a dog can cause the dog to grow larger if you neuter it at a young age. The hormones in an unfixed dog actually stunt growth somewhat.

Neutering also reduces risk of prostate cancer.

American Eskimos do shed a lot, and there are one or two times a year when they lose a lot more fur. You need to use a slicker brush and comb to help remove that undercoat.

Have you tried BilJac food? I've heard it works well with picky dogs and is highly digestible.
