Does my Dog have Mange? ? ? ? ?

Hello,

I have a two year old chihuahua mix recently after my brother in laws dogs visited I noticed a small patch of missing fur on my dogs neck on the bald patch there were a few little tiny black dots I thought at first that it was the hair follicles or clogged pores that went away and now the spot has some small very minor scabs. Today however I noticed another spot on his chest that is doing the same thing. Could this be a case of mange or am I dealing with something more serious? Please Help.

one of my dogs had mange but we didn't know what it was and we went to the vet and he told us what it was. He also said that mange usually starts around the eyes so I guess your dog doesn't have it because it would be around his eye. Go to a vet and get it checked to make sure

yes that definitely sounds like mange has she had all her shots? if not, there's your problem. quickly take her to the vet, mange is treatable but not at home

maybe sounds more like fleas to me

you should have a vet check it out because mange is hard to get rid of if you let it get bad

allthough if you have gotten new type of dog soap or laundry detergent it sould be alergies

i used to have a dog that had mange and it used to scratch a lot, it got to the point were he was hurting itself.

usually they will scratch non stop and hair will fall, the scabs to, so be careful if your dog has it you have to clean everything the dog has touched EVERYTHING! because i think it can transfer to humans as well... and keep it away from other dogs, go check it out with your veterinarian, that is a really serious desease.

Mange is most common in puppies who are kept in unsantiary envornments, although it is possible for an older dog to get it as well, sometimes it may take a long time before the dog shows any signs of mange,However, Bald or thinning pathes or any small lumps around face and eyes are a sign of mange, My best advice is to go to the vet and have a skin cell examination done. it takes only a couple of minutes to diganose this. Its a serious disease, and should be treated ASAP, mange is one of those nasty conditions that will get worse and worse, for it to get better, so the sooner the diganosis the better

It could be a number of things such as allergies, dry skin...or other conditions

good luck!

take him to the vet, he would know. we can't possibly diagnose a skin condition based on description. mange can look like lots of things, and a lot of things look like mange.

The patchy hair loss can be from mange or even flea bites. The only way to find out is to take him to the vets for a diagnosis. I have dealt with mange with small animals and have seen it on my neighbor's dog (rest in peace Peanutbutter). It is very cureable, but needs to be done right away. A flea allergy can be controlled with shots and a good flea treatment. There's even one out now that's a shot and lasts for about 6 months, but may not be available in all areas, so ask your vet about it. Also available for cats too. For fleas you will need to treat your home also along with your yard if you have one. I have a small animal rescue and have 14 cats, a wolf hybrid and 2 dogs that some were rescued, but now live with me, some for many years and we rarely have any problems with fleas plus there's over 50 small animals in cages. This was not so 11 years ago, when we got overrun by them, we bombed, sprayed, and treated all animals then won. We use a topical flea treatment on all of them and treat the yard. Our long hair cat, indoor kept is the only one to ever get them, but she's also bathed monthly and the vet said her getting bathed is washing away the flea treatment allowing her to get fleas we may bring in on ourselves. Yes, we bring fleas into our homes on our own clothes, we may have picked them up at another location and they are now in your vehicle. So don't forget to spray the inside of it for fleas monthly.

best to take on to the vet, because we truly can not see what is going on, just try to keep dog from scratching and licking area.

Is it itchy? Try giving him a quick bath, it may relieve the itch temporarily. I wouldn't worry too much about it tonight if i were you, i mean you said it's midnight so in less than 10 hours he will get to go to the vet right? I have had dogs for over 10 years and have come to learn that skin irritations are definitely not emergencies. Just keep an eye on him tonight- make sure he does not have any serious symptoms like high fever, vomiting, seizures, etc. Take him to the vet first thing in the morning. Good Luck!

ok I had a puppy doberman pincher!it had mange! When i went to the vet he said it starts at the eyes!! The vet said it starts when the animal is a puppy. OMG i just remebered i added the website to my computer that tell u info about mange!! I hope it gets better!!

I just took my 8 week old puppy to the vet yesterday. He had a small patch on his head that was losing hair and had a crusty patch (that looks like a scab) on the skin.

The vet thought it could be mange and did the test, it came back negative and then she took a flea comb and found a flea nest. Fleas can cause hair loss, and probably the black dots that you are seeing. She gave me some Advantix and said the fleas would be gone in 24 hours. I would check to see if it could be fleas first. Best of luck!
