Female dog in heat....?

My dog is 15 months old and i think she is in her first heat cycle but im not sure. I recently got her a really short hair cut and then i started to notice all of these differences. She had a swollen (area) and that's lasted for a few weeks now and now her swelling has gone down a little and she has two hard lumpy breasts? what exaclty is this and why?

Female dog in heat....?

The female dog's reproductive cycle is often termed incorrectly. Some refer to it as a "period" which is what human females go through (bleeding for a week every month from their vagina). Other's call it a "heat" which implies sexual maturity and/or the need to mate.

The real deal is that it starts at different times for all dogs. It starts with bleeding from the vulva. At this time you should go to a pet store and buy a little tie-on underwear and pads. The underwear stay on all the time (unless you are washing and have her covered some other way) and then you change the "pads" a couple times a day. The period of time that this lasts is different for all dogs. After the bleeding decreases she will be in "heat". That means she will be releasing a scent that is undetectable to humans but unresistable to all male dogs. She will be ready to entertain male suitors but will only allow a male dog to penetrate her with their penis if she is fertile (eggs are ready to be fertilized by the dogs semen).

At this time you should be seeing her nipples get a little larger and then they won't go down afterwards. This is what doggy puberty is like for female dogs. The breasts will not go away. More importantly, if you see that they are getting bigger or that the nipples are becoming larger your dog may be pregnant.

The swelling of the vulva, however, does go down after the heat cycle is over.

this is a sign that you should have your dog spayed. by not doing so, you are putting her at risk for pyometra, uterine cancer, and mammary cancer.

why haven't you had her spayed? You are playing puppy russian roulette. At 15 months, it is probably her 2nd or 3rd heat cycle.

Yeah she is in heat.

when she is really in heat she will bleed..a dog period! Just get the dog fixed unless you are planning on breeding.

You should have her spayed. If she is outside there is a very good possibility that a mate will come her way. Please don't contribute to all the dogs in shelters that are euthanized because of this very reason.

Your dog is on heat...???!!! well don forget to give her tampoon....

Get her spayed. If she is spayed then you will not have to deal with any of this, ever again.

Do the right thing.
