Is this a good dog food.?

I have 2 mini dachshunds that are on a 1 cup twice a day diet. I have them now on kibbles and bits (my step mom buys it for all of our dogs... she has 2 dogs). I really think that is a horribe food because if you look at some of the pieces of food it looks like there is black hairs in it. Once I saw that I was like ewww.... I was thinking about putting them on Canidae... but it is expensive. Then I saw that Priority was actually cheaper then Kibbles and bits at some places.... I wanted to know if that is a good food. Or if anyone could give me the top 10 best dog food ranging from lowest price to highest.

Is this a good dog food.?

It is a terrible food and if you want to show your mom proof just send her to this website.

www.dogfoodanalysis.com

It is a great website that reviews most brands of dog food. Canidae is actually one of the most inexpensive quality dog foods out there. And it's well worth it. You would actually not feed as much Canidae as you would kibbles n bits because it is so much more nutritious. So cost wise it may not be that much difference. Some places have buy 10 bags get one free too!!

here is the store locator, call around because the price can range $10!!!!

Try asking the vet, but i think beniful is best but that's my opinion

Beniful-$15.99

Is this a good dog food.?

me? i would prefer not to feed it kibble and bits. we don't give ours that because my dogs just don't like lol

Is this a good dog food.?

Kibbles %26amp; Bits is a horrible food. I feed Merrick. Wellness, Innova, California Natural, Evo, %26amp; Canidae are all good foods.

Is this a good dog food.?

my dog won't eat anything but kibbles and bits, not the best for her but she was on medicated food most her life so i feel good about letting her have what she wants for a change, vet says its fine and that's good enough for me.

Is this a good dog food.?

Canidae is a very good food and it may look like its expensive, but you don't feed the dog as much because its not full of fillers and junk. I don't know anything about Priority foods, sorry. Other good foods are Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance, Solid Gold.

Is this a good dog food.?

I've never heard of Priority but you are right about Kibbles n Bits. It's garbage. If you feed your little, bitty dogs Canidae there is no way that they will need two cups a day. I feed my two extremely active Border Collies 3 cups a day and believe me they burn some energy - their weight is perfect. My German Shepherd sized dog gets 2 cups a day and he still isn't as lean as I would like him to be. So, if you look at it that way it may not be as expensive as you think. Also, feeding them a better diet will save you money on vet bills.

I googled Priority Dog Food to see if I could find you some more information on it and all that came up was recall notices, so it's definitely not something I would consider feeding my dogs.

Is this a good dog food.?

ususally anything that is sold in the supermarket is low quality. california natural, nutro, and eagle pack are much better and aren't too expensive. there are others like solid gold, but they are more expensive. you can go to their websites and find out what stores around you sell them. usually you have to go to a mom and pop store to get them because petsmart, etc doesn't sell them either. also, cheaper ones with lots of fillers, like corn meal, could cause allergies in some dogs. also, with the better quality food you don't have to give them as much because they get all of the nutrients that they need with less food.

Is this a good dog food.?

Youre right, Kibbles n Bits is one of the worst foods out there. My dad used to feed it to his lhasa because she gobbled it like it was candy. It turned her hair red! She was solid black and it turned the hair on the top of her head and down her back coppery red! That cant be good.

I dont know about the top 10, but dogfoodanalysis.com is a good site to start with, and I recently switched my dogs over to Blue Buffalo. I havent been feeding it to them long (only 2 days) but Im already impressed with both the wet and dry foods. The most striking thing about it to me is I know what every single ingredient is. If I wasnt a vegetarian, Id be willing to eat it myself. My husband actually tasted the wet dog food out of curiosity and said it wasnt that bad (he wouldnt eat it all, but can see why the dogs like it).

Its only been two days and Im sold on it. Im waiting to see if it helps their allergy problems and my cocker's sensitive stomach.

Added: Also, on the stuff I used to give my dogs (Science Diet) they were eating 2 and 3 cups a day respectively, and were still acting like they were hungry. Blue Buffalo (and most of the premium dog foods Ive looked in to) recommend half that amount of their food because they have very little or no fillers.

Blue Buffalo is actually slightly cheaper than Science Diet, and it will last twice as long, so you dont always have to pay more for good food.

Yes, fair.

I have a dachshund mix and I give her Country Pet food which looks like a sausage roll and you buy frozen at health food stores. It's a moist food, and I find one roll usually lasts for about a week of feeding. It's about $6-7 usually, so about a dollar a day in food. It's a really good thing to scrutinize what your dog is eating. My dog is older (14) and has dental problems. After her last dental surgery I was told to keep her off any hard food. I was buying her regular Pedigree and Mighty Dog from the store. She lost weight so rapidly I took her back to the vet to get blood tests because I was sure she was terribly sick. Instead, the canned dog food had such a low nutrition value she just wasn't getting what she needed out of it. After I started feeding her the Country Pet stuff she re-gained her weight and has been of a healthy weight ever since. Dachshunds are tricky when it comes to feeding because if they become overweight (which most are prone to) they will face health issues because of their build. And they also prone to dental problems, as most small breed dogs are. I also feed my dog this stuff called Party Animal canned food (from health stores like Whole Foods) when I can't be bothered to cut up the Country Pet roll. She loves it as well. Beware that in some dog food they use fish as an ingredient no matter what the flavor or formula so there maybe a fish-y smell when you feed your doggies. Because of this I generally read the ingredients of all food and recommend you do the same. Hope that all helps.

If the ingredients say MEAT %26amp; BONE MEAL it can have any miscallenous mammal in it, including dogs and cats

The best thing to feed your 2 dogs is an species appropriate diet which is a raw diet. Do some research so you can decide for yourself but it was the best switch I've ever made!!

and the yahoo group rawfeeding is a good starting point as well

Is this a good dog food.?

Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated. Kibbles and Bits has a 1 star rating because "nothing is lower" as it states in the review.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_...

I'm not surprised that you found black hairs in the Kibbles and Bits. Kibbles and Bits contains "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by "rendering plants" , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the "soup" and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as "animal fat", the rest of the animals' remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies (including the makers of Kibbles and Bits) as meat and bone meal.

You can read more about it here.

http://earthislandprojects.org/eijournal...

Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5...

Those black hairs most likely could have been someones dead pet that had black fur. :0(

Top rated foods like Canidae don't use rendered animal products like meat and bone meal.

Heres more about the bad ingredients in grocery store pet food like Kibbles and Bits.
