My dog keeps on gagging......?

My dog is about 2 years old and he gags or something. He doesnt do it everyday but every so often he will start a gagging fit (His mouth isnt open but sound like gagging)....he will do this like 10 times or something then barf. He doesnt throw up food or anything just like yellowish liquid and with some hair. He eats well and does drink water (He also hacks up juices after drinking water too fast). But my main concern is when he does this gagging fit when NOT drinking water. Like he will just be chillin in his crate with his food bowl there with food and do this...Hes been doing this ever since I got him when he was about 6 mos old......Anyone have ANY idea what this is or what is going on? And is there a cure for it? I am getting tired of cleaning it up.

When you say 'gagging fit', is this where his body is sort of doing a rolling-type convulsing? The reason I ask is because I have a pup that is about 18 mos old and he also throws up yellow liquid regularly. I have taken him to the vet, spent hundreds of dollars on blood, urine and fecal tests -- all with no success in determining the problem. My dad and I have determined that he is drinking his own urine because he became potty trained so quickly and has never had an accident on the floor. He stays indoors and was in a crate when he was younger so he never had access to anything foreign that might have caused him to get sick. He is a healthy pup, eats normally and is playful. I hope your dog is ok. :-)

does he eat really fast? if he does try to slow him down by breaking his meal up into 3 parts. Each given about 15 minutes apart. If he doesn't eat fast maybe he has another problem with his esophagus...look into it with your vet. Megaesophagus is one problem, but I haven't seen it in too many dogs. Goodluck!

He also shouldnt be getting fed in his crate. try feeding him when he's not in it then letting him go to the bathroom and then putting him into it. Eating food stimulates his bowels. Water is OK.

Could he be coughing?? Could be a case of kennel cough. It is highly contagious so he could have picked it up anywhere.. Get him to the vet and get him checked out.

Brush him more often, if you can get him/her to stay still vacuum him (yes some dogs LOVE this some hate it lol). After you get done brushing him take a damp rag and wipe the remaining hair off. He is gagging on his hair it sounds like.

could be an allergy- flem in the back of the throat is common and sounds like what is going on. my dog also makes himself throwup when gagging doesn't get it out. his is from an environmental allergy- but there could also be food allergies causing it. many dogs are allergic to high amounts of wheat- found in both dry food and treats. i would talk to a vet to visit that idea more thoroughly, but i wouldn't be overly concerned, as flem and gagging is semi-normal.

The most common cause of what you describe (assuming the dog seems fine otherwise) is chronic tracheitis/tonsilitis caused by licking full anal sacs. The yellowish liquid you describe is common, although it more typically resembles frothy egg whites. (You can see it in the very back of his throat if he lets you look back there....that's a telltale sign.)

It is some sort of gastro-intestinal irritation. Yes Virginia - dogd can have ulcers. Dogs can also have acid reflux. And no, they don' get better on their own.

Have your vet check him out.

The food may be a cause. If he scarfs his food down, he can get some caught in the back of his throat. My little piggy Dachshund does that. Since your mentioned yellow liquid (that is bile from his stomach) and hair, the hair can stick to the back of the throat and feel uncomfortable. If this was not a dog, I would think he had an esophageal problem. Take him to the vet, he may have something caught in there that you can't see. Good wishes.
