Dog furiously scratching?

i have a wonderful dog that has itching issues. the groomer says her ears have narrow openings and an issue with ear hair. i just feel so sorry for her. i have been giving her childrens benadryl which seems to help some. i asked the vet about steroid shots but he doesn't want to go there. says it will shorten her life. but... if she is miserable every day i am thinking i would rather get her the shots and make her happy while she is with us. any input will be appreciated.

Can the ear hair be trimmed? Are there topical creams that the vet can use? Are you sure that it's the hair and not food or a similar allergy?

Can you tape her paws so that the claws won't hurt her?

Steroid shots can be miserable. I wouldn't go that route if the vet doesn't recommend it. It can cause serious problems with the dog.

See a vet who specializes in skin problems in dogs. Change her diet to a food for sensitive systems. When bathing her use unscented shampoos. Has the vet OK'd the benadryl? Many human drugs cause liver and kidney failure in pets.

Oh my goodness, that is so terrible. I would take her to a different vet. Ask around and see if anyone could recommend somebody. It just doesn't sound completely right that it's just ear hair making her scratch like crazy. She might have a bacterial infection or something going on that isn't visible to the eye. Or maybe some kind of microscopic bugs in there (dust mites?) She could also be allergic to something. I'd take her somewhere else and see what additional info you can find out.

Shots at this point seem too extreme. Get a second or even third opinion before doing something that serious. If you're going to pay through the nose for the shots, it's better to pay more up front in seeing other vets in order to make sure you're treating the right cause.

Good luck to you and your dog!

find out the source of the itching

if it rlly is the ear hair, i kno their is a numbing powder (any local petstore) that u apply b4 plucking the h air (i'm serious) so it won't hurt the dog at all

my friend does this w/ her poodle and she says her dogs likes it. lol

but good luck!

It could be a problem with bathing and water getting in the ear canal, also use a shampoo called Mane and tail. It's more for horses but it worked wondeful on my dog..who use to itch and bite at her skin all the time. As far as the ear trim get it done and see what happens ask your groomer if they could show you so you could keep up on it. other than that...im stumped....good luck.

Ear hair is common in some breeds and mixes and there is a powder that you can sprinkle in your dogs ears and then grab and pull this loose hair out. It doesn't hurt the dog at all. Ask your groomer to be sure this is the type of hair you can pull out. She (or he) can tell you what kind of powder to get and show you how to do it.

Then, you can get an ear wash product from your Vet that can be used to cleanse your dog's ears each time you bathe her. Ask your Vet about these suggestions before trying them. And see which ear wash product he would recommend for your dog, if any.

Many times the ears are hotspots for food allergies. My cat has food allergies and the ears are first to show. She will start scratching horribly at them, then her eardrum ruptures. Check for allergies with a vet who specializes in dermatology. Also, I don't place much confidence in what a groomer says. Only a vet can tell you if the ear canals are too narrow.
