Dog Grooming?

Uhh, I have a yorkie, and I brush her every other day (which I should probably start doing it EVERY day..) But she just never seems to look very good, I bathe her once a week, and make sure she's getting enough food and water, she excercises, and I use some dog shampoo that says it will not dry the skin out, but I just want some way to make her look and feel softer. Should I take her to a groomer? Or should I just buy some nicer shampoo? (Also she has hair in her eyes all the time and i'm too afraid to cut it..) So is there any advice, and or tips I could possibly have? Thanks for letting me know!

Dog Grooming?

What is she eating? One of the most common causes of a bad coat is a bad diet. If she's not already on one, find a super-premium food (Innova, Merrick, Wellness, Pinnacle, etc.) and slowly change her over to that...give it about 2-4 months to really see a difference.

I seriously doubt it's the shampoo, but try not bathing her so often. Once a week is a lot, that could be contributing to the problem.

Aside from all of this, a trip to the vet couldn't hurt. Thyroid problems, as well as other health issues, can cause dry skin, itching, and coat problems as well. A blood/urine panel could show a reason for this, as well.

i think you should take her to a groomer

You may also want to use a metal comb if the brush isn't getting the tangles out well enough.

If her skin seems dry and starts to get kind of flaky, bathe her every other week to let the oils in her skin build up.

You can use conditioner after you shampoo her.

If you want the hair in front of the eyes cut, you can call the grooming salon and see what they will charge to do just that.

Dog Grooming?

You might want to change shampoos and start using a creme rinse. Yorkies hair is a lot like ours. You should start putting it up in a top knot to keep out of eyes look in breed books

Dog Grooming?

take her to a groomer and a professial one

You should also be conditioning the coat. We use Mr. Groom Conditioning Spray. You can go to Petedge.com and look under coat conditioners. Also, the type of brush you use can do damage to a yorkies coat. If you really brush 2 or 3 times a day with a rubber tipped pin brush ( they look like a wig brush) it will keep the coat from breaking. If you are not putting the dogs hair up, you can cut in some bangs just from outside of eye to outside of eye. By the way, groomers do alot more for your dog than just washing and brushing. We look for any problems you might not be aware of. Such as toy breeds sometimes do not shed their puppy teeth. We pull ear hair to prevent infection. Trim nails. Express anal sacs. So a trip to a groomer might be necessary to get you started. Have fun!

Take her to a pro. groomer they can help.

Dog Grooming?

do you use conditioner? and detangler? do you use a shampoo for dogs?

if you decide to keep her hair you can put it up so its out of her eyes without cutting it.

she would probally look really cute with a little pony tail.dont forget a bow. :)

Dog Grooming?

you need to take her to the groomer for a hair cut mainly for the bangs, never do them yourself leave it to the professionals it is too dangerous unless you know what you are doing. But in regards to the coat she could have some metabolic problem going on, you should take her to the vet and get a blood test she could have a thyroid problem or need vitamin supplements but it is always good to rule out anything major that could need medical treatment.

Dog Grooming?

In a full bottle of shampoo put one capfull of Infusium Leave In Hair Treatment. Shake it up. Shampoo the dog. This will make the fur feel great. It will also help you comb her easier between baths because it's a detangler. If you are the one bathing her regularly, are you expressing her anal glands? If not, next time you go to the vet, have a tech show you how or have a groomer show you next time you take her in. Also, is she letting you trim her nails? This isn't as important for the fronts as it is for the backs. If you can hear her clicking as she walks across the floor or if you can see her toes twisting, she needs the nails trimmed so they are 'off the ground'.

To trim hair out of the eyes, comb the fur on top of her head straight forward. Blunt cut it, then fluff it back and it'll look good %26amp; be out of her eyes. Have fun.

Dog Grooming?

A groomer might be a very good idea. They will use tools and methods of brushing that will help improve the look of yur dog's coat. Be sure to ask the groomer to show you how to brush her properly and what brushes to use. This way she will look her best between groomer's visits.

Dog Grooming?

bath her ONCE a month unless shes filthy, like coated in mud.

keep brushing her e/o day.

get better food

trim the hair out of her eyes with clippers or rounded tip siccors

if none of that works then see a groomer

Dog Grooming?

i would take her to the groomers you are doing fine what you are doing with her but she dose need her eyebrows trimmed so that they don't get into her eyes so they wont bother her i would do it for the first time and while you are there ask the groomer to show you how to do it. DON'T BE AFRAID TO DO IT YOU MIGHT MESS UP OR SOMETHING believe me i did it when i was grooming a dog just like yours luckily i had someone there to fix it for me.

Dog Grooming?

this is where her breeder could help you learn to groom, or maybe call your local kennel club and see if there are any breeders in the area with similar breeds (other yorkies, maltese, shih tzu, Lhasa, apso) who would be willing to show you the finer points of grooming. There's no reason to take her to the groomer if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. If you can't find a mentor, maybe one trip to the groomer and ask to stay with the dog and see how its done? I own a Cavalier, I brush her every few days (but she has tons less hair than a yorkie, lol) One thing I learned was to never brush the coat dry, always dampen the coat with a grooming spray or even water before brushing. You pull out less hair and it keeps it healthier. For the hair in the eyes, either trim the hair away or learn to put it in a top knot with a rubberband. (the ones people use for hair are fine) a proper spray in conditioner with every brushing will not only soften the coat, but dampen it sutibly too ;) As for shampoo- I just washed my pup with a new product- it's called Kalaya Emu Oil shampoo (its for pets) we followed the instructions on the bottle exactly, its been a week and she has NEVER been this soft and silky before. Also try adding a quality conditioner. What brushes are you using? I ussually start with a pin brush to get out any tangles, then comb for the fine bits to be sure I got everything and finish with a slicker. One more idea- her food directly effects the quality of her coat. If your feeding a lower quality diet, no amount of grooming will give you a nice coat. Stay away from anything you can buy at the grocery store or walmart. I'd reccomend any 4 star or higher food from www.dogfoodanalysis.com , it might be more expensive, but it really produces results. My girl eats Timberwolf and Orijen, our show puppies are eating Eagle Pack Holistics and their coats are amazing. Hope that helps! feel free to pm me. -Neb
