There are tons of schools for dog grooming out there, look for one in your area for when you finish high school. A job at petsmart may need you to have training, but if not it might be a great way to start off getting some experience. Why not ask the people in the store how they got training and jobs in the field too?

Contact a PetSmart grooming dept. in your area and ask for the grooming manager and they can direct you on how to apply for a job there. Good luck! If that doesn't pan out the way you want it to, you can try PetCo, or you can try and find an individual grooming shop where a seasoned dog groomer can train you in exchange for work or even pay you a small salary as you learn. Most places that go to the trouble to train new talent want some reward for their investment and so they may have you contract to stay with them for at least a year (some places perhaps two years) before going out on your own as a groomer- at another shop or to open your own shop.

There are schools that teach grooming, but once you go through their courses, you will still need a place to learn to put that knowledge to practice.

PetSmart groomers that are trained within, go to a school for grooming (from within their corporation) for awhile and then the groomer in training comes back and grooms a specific amount of grooms for different kinds of dogs under supervision before they can take clients without supervision.

I learned from two different individual groomers that I worked for and I got paid a small wage while learning and it was well worth it. I had a lot of work to do and they were great teachers.

My friend is a groomer at Petsmart. They will pay for you to go to grooming school, it's about a month, but you have to sign a contract stating you will work there for 2 years, or else you have to pay back the fee for the grooming school. You can start there as a bather with no schooling, but the real money's in grooming. She loves it and makes a good living, go for it!

Maybe you can sign up for some classes that teach you how to groom like a pro. Then, you can apply to work there.

Everyone has it right. You'd have to start as a bather then when everyone (your salon manager, District manager) is sure of your abilities then your sent to grooming school. You have to be 18, but you'd have to wait anyway. You cannot do cats at all until you have been grooming at least a year and do a few other things. Also Independent grooming schools are also an option. But be prepared to spend a couple grand, yes that is an accurate number, and it is usually a lot longer than a month. But most I believe also teach you the basics of how to run a business, may be wrong on that one. Research your options and figure out what is best for you.

As a professional groomer for 11yrs,

There is much more to being a "groomer" than bathing dogs.

Petsmart will hire you as a bather and when you have proven yourself able to do a good job, handle the animals well, deal wit customers and generaly prove yourself they will send you to grooming school (about a month long). They pay you to go, the you go back to your store and do 100 dogs, all different cuts to prove you learned and are able to handle breed cuts as well as "personality" cuts (where you have a mutt and need to just make it look cute from your imagination. At this point you are made a groomer and make 50% commission + tips.

Petco to my knowledge does not have a training program.

Independendent salons may take you as a Bather and then if you are lucky someone will teach you if you are eager and willing.

It is a hard but rewarding career.

As a 17yr old, start at Petsmart. Get a feel for what the job intales. You can alwasy go somewhere else from there.

Yes, they do make you sign a contract but, they can't inforce it. (Trust me, I have many groomer friends who have learned there and gone on to bigger and better things)
