Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

What does "hypoallergenic" really mean?
To be hypoallergenic is to have a decreased tendency to cause allergies. Hypo means less, not none. Hypoallergenic dog breeds will still produce allergens, but because of their coat type, will typically produce less than others. People with severe allergies and asthma will still be affected by a hypoallergenic dog.
There is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog.
What coat-type makes the difference?
There are two coat types that produce a lesser amount of allergens: single-coated dogs, who do not have a thick undercoat, and hairless dogs. However even hairless dogs can produce enough dander to to affect a highly allergic person.

Boxers are great for all these things... and they are one of the best dogs for small children, they tend to put up with them with alot of patience. The hypo allergenic part is that bad part, because I don't know if they are, but they fit the rest of the criteria.

What about a Retriever?

most dogs that need to be groomed every 4 to 6 weeks are the best for allergies. it doesn't sound like you would prefer a small dog over a larger dog. poodle or poodle mix, sht tzu or mix, bichon or mix, etc are more of a show dog, but they do very well with kids, and are very smart so they are trainable. go to the animal shelter and ask questions

I know you said you hate poodles and I can understand why if you don't know much about them (the standard poodle that is). Firstly they don't shed which is the main thing. Secondly they are excellent working dogs and we see a few over here (England) in working trials. They track and search very well, do the agility brilliantly and perform well at the obedience. I haven't seen any doing the patrol dog work but without the daft hairdo's can look a bit rugged rather than... well you know what I mean.
I'd give the Standard Poodle another thought.

Here are three breeds that are supposed to be good for allergy sufferers. These are all larger breeds that do not have curly hair. If raised with kids they will do fine with kids. They are friendly dogs, but with training and socialization you will ensure that they will be obedient and friendly. These are just some ideas. If you like these dogs you will want to do more research on your own, I have met a few of these dogs, but I don't know a whole lot about them.

I have two Portuguese Water dogs who can be between 35 and 60 pounds. They do not shed and are hypoallergenic. They come in two coat varieties, wavy and curly. The wavy is similar to a golden retriever kind of coat as in it is wavy, and shiny...except this coat does not shed and grows like human hair, so a haircut should be in order every six weeks.

you could also go to akc.org for more information on this wonderful breed. You can shave their hair down to be quite short, so hair length does not have to be an issue. My dogs would be a perfect fit since they have all the traits you have listed and then some. Just be careful to find a good breeder who you like. You could contact the PWD rescue to see if they have any older Portuguese Water Dogs (PWD) available if you do not want to take the time to house break it.
However, I would really suggest you go to a nice animal shelter with your girlfriend's mother to see if she can tolerate any of those wonderful animals.
Wish you the best of luck

Boy... this is a toughie...
My Aussie is half shepherd and half Blue Heeler. Shepherds usually have a lot of hair, but some blue heelers have shorter hair. Mine does. He's very smart, loyal, strong, trainable and great with children. He's a one-family dog. He doesn't want a lot of other people trying to pet him. He's friendly enough, but doesn't want people touching him. I consider that to be friendly enough. His mom was a mini-shepherd, so he's smaller than most shepherds.
My other two dogs are wonderful with children, but pyrs are long haired. They are calmer than my Aussie. and more friendly. They are strong, probably stronger than my Aussie who's pretty strong.
If you're not a poodle person, don't get a labradoodle. That's just a "designer dog" which means a mutt that people pretend is a pedigree. Poodles are sensitive and nervous.
As a kid I had terriers and my favorite was the welch terrier.
Most dogs are not truly hypoallergenic, but short haired dogs are less antagonistic. Beware of people who are pushing dogs and claiming them to be hypoallergenic. There's only one breed that truly can claim that and they charge an arm and a leg plus for those.

Greyhounds are excellent dogs for folks with allergy issues and they fit well with your other criteria. They have very short hair, are very friendly, good with kids, anywhere from 60-85 lbs, and trainable.
However, you either must have a fenced in yard (4ft min) or always have on a leash when outside. (They will blow through an invisible fence like it isn't there and snap their neck if chained.)
Since they are bred for sport, they are a very healthy breed compared to most other pure bred dogs. And despite their speed, are fairly calm dogs that really prefer to sleep the day away. (They call them 45mph couch potatoes.)
There are greyhound rescue groups all over the place. Find one near you and they will be able to find a dog with a profile that fits your needs.
My second recomendation would be a bull terrier. There are alot of rescue groups for them too and they fit your criteria list fairly well too.

Take notice of the list sent by "Big Kisses" (hey - it looks as though she is sensible enough to have a GSD as her own dog! So she's GOTTA be good for ya!)
Take notice of the fact that organisations needing an aide dog (guide, hearing, whatever) for an allergic person head straight for the Poodle - either pure-bred, or crossed with a Labrador. I'm not a Poodle person so won't vouch for this, but the folklore is that the Standard Poodle is a very intelligent dog (a high proportion of circus "trick" dogs were Poodles, suggesting high trainability) and that the pompom-cut commonly seen on Poodles of all sizes stems from the original work of the breed, which was to be tossed over-board to retrieve a rope attached to a net or cray-pot, if the fisherman lost it.
The coat was mostly shaved, so that when the dog got back on board it would shake very little water everywhere, plus to reduce the time needed for it dry out afterwards; but the pompoms were left on the joints to keep them dry-%26amp;-warm and so reduce the risk of arthritis.
But there is absolutely no need for any pet Poodle to be given a pompom cut or a lion cut, it is just a fashion that saves the owner from having to twice-a-year pluck the dead "wool" out.
Be aware that, regardless of what breed you get, the pooch is going to have to be given LOTS of brushing and bathing (baths no more than 24 hours before she visits the allergic mother), and this girlfriend is going to need a good brushing-off before going home.
One person I disapprove of is himself allergic but insisted on getting a GSD, so the poor dog is bathed EVERY day!
Frankly, a human+dog relationship usually lasts about 20 times as long as a boyfriend+girlfriend relationship, so I would advise deferring getting a dog until the current relationship ends - either in a breakup (and so you can get a dog that YOU like) or in a wedding (in which case yes, you need a hypoallergenic pooch).
If it doesn't end in a wedding, I ask that you settle down and work out which ONE breed of dog actually suits you best. People who flop from breed to breed to breed disturb me.

I know you said you don't like poodles but have you ever spent time with a standard poodle (instead of a toy or one of the little poo mixes)? They are extremely smart, very trainable, good with kids, well over 30lbs, don't shed much if kept well groomed and are usually good for people with allergies, and are nice, friendly, well tempered dogs. You can keep them just clipped all over and they look fine, not froo-frooy or anything.

The answer is simple.
Get the German Shepherd and a new girlfriend.
