What is the best tea cup dog to have that my 13 year old could take care of.?

My 13 year old daughter wants a teacup dog that she can take of. I would like for it to have short hair. Thanks.

"Tea cups" are often bred with size being the only consideration. It is hard to tell if a puppy has health problems but they often develop when the breeder only focuses on one thing. Also "tea cups" are very fragile and you almost have to keep them in a tea cup just to protect them. Forget about your daughter actually being able to play with the dog. You may as well get her a mouse.

I would suggest you contact the American Kennel Club for breeders in your area. Go to the kennel and see how they do it.

If the place is packed with lots of dogs of various breeds, dirty conditions, one dog being kept in a kennel over another dog, go elsewhere. Another clue that the breeder is just doing "puppy mill " work is that they have no champions in the close background of their dogs.

If they are a reputable breeder, you can ask to see their pedigree charts and you should see at least ONE champion no further back than a grandparent, or several in the great grandparent generation. If there is not a champion on the entire chart, think "puppy mill" and again, go elsewhere.

I got a cute little Chihuahua from a decent breeder. She is now full grown and weighs only 4 pounds. She is well proportioned and has no health problems whatsoever. She also has no problem attacking our neighbor's Golden Retriever or our Ridgeback. Chihuahuas make good guard dogs because they are very territorial and will bark LOUD if anyone comes into their territory.

A poodle. You have to get them groomed regularly, but they don't shed.

What's a tea cup dog? A thirteen year old shouldn't have trouble with any dog just so long as it is house trained and isn't a wild maniac. I think it's great that your daughter wants one. I don't know what I would do without mine. If your getting short hair because of shedding though, good luck because it probably won't make that big of a difference.

"Tea cup" anythings are almost always dogs with a lot of health problems since they've been bred from the runts of dogs that are already very tiny. Be prepared for high vet bills if you get something that's not even a real breed - there are no such things as tea cups - they're runts!

Walkinglady has it right about the term "teacup". What you really seem to be wanting would be a toy breed. Check out the AKC website in their breeds section. You can see all the different toy breeds and see which one will fit into your lifestyle the best.
